Sewn mixed-media collage done through a blithe feminist lens. Many craft theorists discuss the oppositional play involved in using handcraft techniques in contemporary contexts. Saskia van Kampen’s multi-media sewn collages explore this concept through the disruption of printed artifacts with materials such as lace, thread, and paper. The printed artifacts used in these pieces were from advertisements and articles found in vintage magazines, catalogues, and booklets. The lacey pieces are held away from the wall in order to allow them to cast their shadows—a reflection of how these demands of women follow us into the future. These pieces are meant to be read, questioned, and hopefully draw both shock and laughter.
